New Summer, New Adventure

4 Jun

Hi everyone-

Thanks to everyone who followed me last summer while I was in South Africa. It was an amazing summer during which I learned a lot about myself and others. My blog helped me track my adventures and internally process the difficult things I was seeing and learning at the Scalabrini Refugee Centre on a daily basis. This summer will be very different, but I imagine this blog will serve a similar purpose. I will explain my internship and reasons for being in New York a little later.

My first few days in NYC were spent with my brother’s friends. They were nice enough to let me stay at their place before NYU Summer Housing opened up. I stayed with them in Jackson Heights, Queens in their cute and modern apartment. They were so welcoming and showed me around my first night in the city. Queens is very ethnic- I had some delicious Indian and Thai food dinners. I also spent my first few days in a training program for my internship where we did Excel and PowerPoint training. I met some wonderful people I will be working with this summer. I can’t wait!

Last weekend I moved into my dorm. I am staying in an apartment style NYU dorm in the West Village. I have seven other roommates, all of which are interning in the city. We are from all over- Los Angeles, Texas, Michigan, Jersey, New York, Connecticut, etc. We get along very well for now. It is definitely nice to have a group to explore the city with.

Things I have done so far in the city include: met up with friends for dinner and drinks, explored TriBeCa (where I am living), went to a street fair in the lower east side, tried delicious restaurants for dinner like Peanut Butter & Co, went shopping in Soho, somewhat learned the subway system, went to the biggest Macy’s in the country, walked around Time Square, tanned by the Hudson river, and went on multiple runs along the Hudson river. It has been awesome so far. I cannot wait for another summer filled with academic and cultural learning and friends!
